HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF CALVARY ASSEMBLIES OF GOD TANZANIA

Apostle Danstan Haule Maboya (left) and Pastor Z. Ryoba (Right)
In 1972, I start a student fellowship in MATI Ilonga Kilosa which later becomes a Church with members of staff joining together with the surrounding community. By 1978 it had grown from 20 students to over 100 people.

In 1978 I joined the University of Dar es Salaam to study Agriculture and I become a Chairman of the Student fellowship which grew up to more than 50 students by the end of 1981. In 1983 March, I started a small Church in Chamwino, Morogoro with 7 adults and 9 children. By November, 1986, the Church had grown up to 55 people. In November, 1986 Pastor D.S.H. Maboya joined me and on 6 February, 1987 we held an open air meeting at Sabasaba Stadium, Morogoro. At the end of 5 days, we started a Branch of the Chamwino Church in Kikundi Primary School, Morogoro. By, 1994, it had grown to about 250 people from 12 people. We then registered Calvary Assemblies of God Church in November, 1994. Currently the Church has grown up to 400 Churches all over Tanzania.

With Pastor D.S.H. Maboya as its first Bishop and Pastor Z.M. Ryoba as its first Secretary General. The Church has four zones namely: Northern Zone, Southern Zone, Southern Highland Zone, Western Zone and Eastern Zone we had four first Zonal Bishops namely: Bishop F. Mnkande, Northern Zone; Bishop S. Maghashi, Western Zone; Bishop B. Elimwigamba,Eastern Zone; Bishop Kambanga ,Southern Zone; and Bishop Mwaisum, Southern Highland Zone. Bishop Charles Abiundi was an Assistant Secretary General who later in 2003 became an Assistant to CALVARY ASSEMBLIES OF GOD

Bishop Maboya. Currently we have the same number of zones but some of the zonal Bishops have changed, particularly the Western Zone where we now have Bishop S. lazaro; the Southern Highland Zone where we have Bishop Mwaliego and the Northern Zone where we have Bishop Madulu.

  1. Thanks for the overview insight. I am of the best view that CAG produces a swahili book on the church history so that the majority of members and others can read. Thank you. Pastor Adamson shavunzah, CAG korogwe
